Teaching it like it is – Aboriginal


Develop the confidence and capacity to educate and support Aboriginal young people in relationships & sexual health.

Our 2-day interactive course is designed to increase the confidence and ability of all educators who work with Aboriginal young people (including ACEOs, ASETOs,  AETs and AEWs) to educate and inform them about relationships and sexual health.  All topics include practical demonstrations of activities and resources to engage Aboriginal young people.

The course covers communication and feelings, healthy relationships, power and bullying, the body, puberty and reproduction, safer sex, media and technology, diversity and more.

Course Outline

Participants will:

  • develop the confidence to talk about relationships and sexual health with Aboriginal young people
  • engage with practical learning activities and teaching methods
  • learn how to create and utilise opportunities to engage Aboriginal young people in conversations about relationships and sexual health
  • acquire a range of resources to support Aboriginal young people in relationships and sexual health education
  • explore where to access further information and support

Participants will receive a Certificate of Achievement and recognition of training and development hours with reference to relevant Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

Curriculum manual

The Yarning Like It Is curriculum manual is designed to complement relationships and sexual health lessons in the classroom, and features activities with Aboriginal characters and perspectives.

What is Sexual Health?

This free poster (available from our Online Shop) is suitable for primary schools, and explains the physical, emotional, mental, social and community aspects of sexual health throughout our lives. Click here for the PDF version.

We can provide on-site or regional training to ten or more staff (this includes SSOs, ACEOs and AEWs).

Course Details

This course is tailored to school staff working with Aboriginal students including teachers, SSOs, ACEOs, ASETOs,  AETs and AEWs.

Please note: Teachers who are looking to run sequential relationships and sexual health lessons in the classroom may find our Primary or Secondary courses more suitable. This can be followed by our Resource Updates which can focus on Aboriginal-specific activities and perspectives.
